If you choose to sell your car through a private sale, this means you'll be spending money you already don’t have on advertising - with no guarantee that you will make a sale. Advertising can be expensive, and it’s not without its drawbacks.

You generally need to provide a phone number for potential buyers and you will be spending your time fielding phone calls and answering questions from random people who may or may not follow up with you. You may also be inundated with calls from people who are not potential buyers but rather other advertising salesmen promising you a quick sale.

If you do connect with potential buyers through your ad, how can you be sure which ones are seriously interested and not simply going to waste your time trying to get an unreasonable bargain and then move on to the next potential victim?  And how about going to a dealership to sell your car? Unless your bargaining skills are top notch, you're in for quite a hassle trying to get what your car is worth. Dealers are experts who have years of experience at beating you down on price: that's how they make a profit! When you are “dealing with a dealer” there’s no guarantee of a fair price. And you can’t be sure you’re getting a legitimate valuation, especially if your car is a different make than those offered by the particular dealership.
